Book Summary On Presentation Of Self
Book Summary On Presentation Of Self Introduction The presentation of oneself is based on the observation of an individual through comparing the life of him and the other people. Because of that inspiration of determining the revolutions that are found in the society, the roles and relationships that are found can affect the value of an individual and the idea on how he can describe himself from other people. Due to the intensive curiosity of an individual in life and his environment, there are studies that stress out the possible explanation on how to describe the changes in the earnest way. Various sociological models and approaches were presented to show the connection of the man in his environment. The interaction of the people in the social life is presented by the Erving Goffman in his dramaturgical model that attempts to see the society in a lighter sense. The Key Ideas Erving Goffman prepared the key ideas behind the discussion on the values wherein the ideas in theorizing the social roles and relations that ar e present in the contemporary society. According to the book of Goffman, the individual performs a certain role, which varies according to their audience. Those individuals as actors have an intention in manipulating the role that they play for the purpose of managing others impressions of them. Usually, this occurs through the interaction of the individuals in their everyday life. Since the society presents the interactions that usually matters with the human social relations or group of life, there is a natural involvement of disciplines that goes right with the study of sociology including the economics, political science, and psychology because they all fall within the topic of human society. Goffman, presented the theory that suggests that individuals engage in a significant amount of expressive manipulation along several fronts. Goffman likened his ideas to a theatre because ââ¬Å"individuals are, in essence, dramatic actors on a stage playing parts dictated by cultureâ⬠and this is the goal of such a presentation is acceptance from the audience through manipulation. If the actor succeeds, then they will be viewed as they desired by the audience. Goffman argues that the key to this success is to control which information the audience has access to (Goffman, 1959). Unlike the sociological theories wherein the individuals are linked with the disciplines early states, Goffmanââ¬â¢s dramaturgical model outlines the existence of the humanââ¬â¢s perspective on the stages where as an actor he usually plays. Giddens (2009) suggests that front regions are situations where individuals act out formal roles, essentially when they are ââ¬Ëon-stageââ¬â¢. Performances in front regions often require teamwork in order to be successful. Impression management also occurs in the front regions as the actor is trying to give the audience certain impressions of himself. Goffman suggests that ââ¬Å"when an individual appears before others, he will have many m otives for trying to control the situationâ⬠. In contrast, back regions (of the stage) are where individuals or performance teams prepare themselves for their roles. Goffman implies that it is where teams discuss and rehearse their performance before they enter the front stage. Props can also be used to aid an actor in their performance and they are assembled in the back region. These props assist an actor in convincing the audience that their performance is true. For example, a waitress in a restaurant would use a notepad and paper to take an order, to help convince her audience (customers) that her performance is true. Goffman indicated that the two regions are connected by a ââ¬Å"guarded passagewayâ⬠. This stops public performances being shattered by an inadvertent look from an audience member. If an individualââ¬â¢s performance is weak, the audience will see through it. ââ¬Å"The phenomenon of embarrassment is where the actor acts ineffectually or is unable to su stain their expected role. This leads to them being excluded from full participation in society, which demonstrates the importance of maintaining the appearance of being a competent social actor. The dramaturgical models value in theorizing social roles and relations in contemporary society is open to discussion. Goffmanââ¬â¢s ideas are praised for having had a ââ¬Å"profound influenceâ⬠on sociology as a discipline. On his book, it clearly states that Goffman uses the dramaturgical metaphor as his contribution in the field of sociology. He acknowledges the most stimulating and thought-provoking contributions to sociology which made the sociologists today refer to his work, especially for examples on how to carry out micro sociological work.

Adaptive Supply Chain Co-Management manual Essay
Adaptive Supply Chain Co-Management manual - Essay Example Collaboration and competition have often been regarded as incompatible concepts especially as evolutionary biology became well-known in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It was presumed that only the fittest can survive if those with the most desirable traits are naturally selected over those that did not possess these ideas. This mentality spilled over into business literature and led to the manifestation of certain laws such as the Sherman and Clayton Anti-trust Acts (Zeiltin, 2007). However, time illustrated that sometimes certain kinds of cooperation and competition did not necessarily have to replace each other as seen through the formation of professional associations, cartels and business groups. Individuals may participate in a cartel in order to enhance the quality of output or their safety; this may also be done for reasons of efficiency. Some forms of collaboration such as the inter-firm network came about due to rising complexities of organisations. However, they took relatively long periods of time before they came to be accepted as cultural norms; a lot of ambiguity exists on the need for collaboration or cooperation; all of it depends in the nature of acceptance in the concerned nation (Zeiltin, 2007). Businesses today have now moved from the anti-trust mindset of yester years; in fact, it is not uncommon to find some form of collaboration between competitors in almost all industries of the economy. New technologies are becoming more complex and require huge capital investment to develop; markets are getting more turbulent, and the time needed to deliver products to the market is also increasing. Additionally, time and geographical boundaries have shrunk thus indicating that operating business internationally is a critical factor. Government policies are not particularly favourable in conducting business and so are other issues within

Site research assignment Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Site assignment - Research Paper Example There are a lot of trees, of various shapes, sizes and colors. Most of them are dark brown in color and are dried because of cold weather. The sun is setting and behind the cloudy atmosphere there is a bright orange-yellow light including a little purplish shade. I see here a lot of colors, the ones which are part of this place, like the pale green grass, brown tress, gray pebbles and the white sides of the jogging track, a small fountain and a pond with a few birds and ducks. There are a lot of people around. People here are wearing warm and neutral colors like red, yellow, grey and black. However, a pink and purple stroller catches my attention. It might be referred to the most colorful sight in the park. The park is full of people and kids around. This must be the busiest time, I guess. There are number of people who are using the park for a walk, others for playing and the rest for feeding the birds and the ducks. I see a group of three women, one of them is carrying her baby in stroller. Fragrance of the place is that of soil, the moist air and a very strong feeling of dryness is experienced. Date: November 21, 2013 Time: 7:00 PM Observation: As this observation requires a walk ignoring surroundings therefore I came at a time when it was quiet here. The space was filled with moisture. The grass was getting wet and there were no birds that could be seen except for a couple of ducks. The pebbles were glazing the dew drops and it was getting cold. I see the grey sky with slight orange shade (of the city lights). The thing that caught my attention was the small house built for ducks and a watch man who probably was there before to take care of the ducks. I could see a couple of ducks outside and I had been wondering since then that where did the rest go. Now I know where they managed to escape. Date: November 22, 2013 Time: 6:00 AM Observation: Today I decided to go for a morning walk at the park. The reason I chose an early timing for the observation was to c omplete the requirements. The sounds I could hear were of the birds chirping and looking for food, I could hear the water coming out of the fountain, I could hear the ducks screaming for bread as laughter could also be heard (of the people around who were feeding the ducks, I think). I could hear the jogging footsteps. The far away sounds were that of two men talking very loudly, a racing car and a cycle bell. Date: November 22, 2013 Observation through memory: It was dawn at 6:00 AM; the sky had beautiful yellowish and orange lights. The park was quiet. There was a lot of dew in the grass and the pebbles on the side of the jogging track were having dew drops upon them. Sight of hues of dawn, pebbles, soil, dew, trees and grasses have a soothing effect. Anyone could have slipped if he/she had tried to run on the grass. The air was cold and wet. There were some people who were jogging on the track while a few were feeding the ducks who were making a lot of noise. The trees were givin g a view of the haunted path with no leaves upon the branches. Their dark brown color was even darker. The ambience was very soothing and relaxing. The wind was blowing and one could feel the coldness in it. I could smell hot coffee and moisture in the air. Variety of Hues Fog, winters and Silence Fragrance of Coffee and moisture Date: November 23, 2013 Time: 10:00 AM Observation: The following day, I went to the park at 10:00 am in the morning. The reality was not at all this. There was fog and the wind was cold. The grass was all wet with dew. There
